Can’t you hear the music? You Gotta Get. That. Dirt Off Ya Shoulder.
I have to admit, when I first saw this footage of Obama brushing dirt off his shoulder, I wasn’t paying attention.
I just thought, oh, he’s dusting off his suit, he wears dark suits, it happens. And then somebody mentioned JayZ - at that point of the game in April, I wasn’t scrutinizing him the way I was by September. All I knew about him had to do with the issues he stood for and voted on.
Then, the other day my sister mentioned some news show did a special about Obama’s family being the first family of Cool. (Which is a nice compliment and all but I hope the media isn’t looking to cling to that rather than his ability to govern. He may be a pimp style president, but let’s not let style get in the way of substance.)
And I realized, that wasn’t just a gesture. The man is barely ten years older than me. He meant it the way I would.
As in JayZ’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulders.” And it dawned on me, I had put him more in that “pretty cool but a little geeky” box. When actually? The President Elect is our Contemporary.
Which for some reason I like better.
